What it was like on the ground
We ordered our first real luosifen at a stall in Liuzhou and understood immediately: the broth is sour, spicy, savory and slightly funky, and the pickled bamboo shoot is the soul of it. The woman next to us slurped hers in five minutes and left without a word. In Sanjiang, the Chengyang bridge was worth the detour, a 100-meter wooden span with covered corridors where Dong villagers still cross daily. Liuzhou is not polished, but it is real in a way the postcard cities are not.
